CL Round-Up: Bellingham Grabs Late Winner As Dream Real Start Continues

Jude Bellingham continued his impressive start at Real Madrid by scoring late winner against Union Berlin at Bernabeu Stadium. Following this incredible achievement, former Borussia Dortmund star raced off to embrace his team-mates before performing his trademark celebration for Carlo Ancelotti’s side to secure a 1-0 victory at Bernabeu.

Bellingham scored his sixth goal in six matches for Real Madrid so far this season – joining Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Cristiano Ronaldo who also have scored on their Champions League debuts.

Arsenal beat Napoli 4-1

Even without many first-team regulars in Unai Emery’s squad, Arsenal have managed to adapt with poise and precision under new manager Unai Emery. They dominated London’s opening stages before Ramsey unleashed his incredible touch to score their opener against an immobile Alex Meret.

The second goal was quickly conceded when Kalidou Koulibaly took control and dashed down the right flank to set up Jose Callejon, only for Petr Cech to make an outstanding save before Poland international Milik missed his free-kick attempts and miscued badly.

Napoli struggled to cope with Arsenal’s combination of speed and attack. Lucas Torreira and Ainsley Maitland-Niles stood out as outstanding midfield players, while Laurent Koscielny and Henrikh Mkhitaryan provided outstanding defensive support from behind. Lorenzo Insigne and Piotr Zielinski missed excellent chances during the second half.

Real Madrid beat Union Berlin 1-0

As the game draws towards full time, Madrid begin to exert more of their will on proceedings. Rodrygo sees his shot from outside of the box expertly blocked by Ronnow; Joselu attempts a header which is blocked as well.

Union Berlin aren’t having too many issues adjusting to Madrid’s steady play so far; their German side have handled everything Madrid has thrown their way surprisingly well so far. But as the game nears the final stages, their energy may begin to decline.

Laidouni is replaced with Brenden Aaronson to add some energy and create more momentum in Madrid’s attack, yet this doesn’t work and they go into half time leading by one goal despite dominating play throughout. Carlo Ancelotti will understand something needs to change quickly in order to take full advantage of being up front in this half.

Bayern Munich beat Manchester United 4-3

Bayern was off to a slow start but after half time they ramped up and controlled the final thirty minutes with ease. Leroy Sane took advantage of an Andri Onana gift before Serge Gnabry doubled their lead thanks to Jamal Musiala’s impressive run and finished off an unlikely victory with a goal.

United was given a boost with four minutes remaining when Marcus Rashford played Hojlund through, scoring his inaugural goal for United. That would have earned them a draw but unfortunately VAR review awarded a penalty that changed everything.

Dayot Upamecano’s header struck Christian Eriksen on the arm, prompting an initial decision by referee Tom Aloisi not to award a penalty kick – which later changed following consultation with pitchside monitor. But after consulting with Bellingham from 12 yards, Aloisi gave no chance for appeal, and this result left visitors struggling to cope with Bayern’s lively attack; its effects could prove crippling to their confidence despite once looking like one of Europe’s great hopes.

Tottenham beat Borussia Dortmund 3-1

North Londoners had a rough start to their European campaign, but are back in contention thanks to two victories from three games played so far. Harry Kane scored twice while Son Heung Min added one. Andriy Yarmolenko’s wonder strike from midfield proved enough for Dortmund against Spurs.

Tottenham’s high press was key in forcing Borussia Dortmund into long, direct passes that opened up space behind. Eriksen, Sissoko and Moura did an outstanding job winning balls from midfield defenders and winning possession back for them to exploit this advantage in an initially tight opening period.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang saw his goal disallowed for offside after he scored with Mahmoud Dahoud’s cross past Burki – it was a major setback as Dortmund sought a comeback but Tottenham’s deeper 5-3-2 structure held firm; they can take comfort knowing that even without Dele Alli they still possess quality and depth at their disposal.
